FLORIDA EATING DISORDERS LOBBY DAY 2010
Twenty advocates from around Florida joined The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness, in conjunction with National Eating Disorders Association's STAR Program and H.O.P.E. on March 24, 2010 in Tallahassee to advocate for eating disorders and the Mental and Nervous Disorders Act. This bill will revise requirements and limitations for optional coverage for mental & nervous disorders; repeal provisions relating to optional coverage required for substance abuse impaired persons; and provides for application by increasing access to care and necessary treatment. This bill includes "Eating Disorders" in the bill and would increase outpatient/inpatient treatment opportunities!
We were able to meet with 18 offices throughout the day and bring awareness, information and education to legislators as to why we need mental health parity now in the State of Florida. A BIG thank you to the amazing adovcates who used their voices in Tallahassee, and to those who wrote letters supporting the bill and that helped to make this day a success.
Even though Lobby Day is behind us, there is still so much to do! Throughout the year, we will be sending out advocacy alerts and we encourage you to use your voice to help promote change with eating disorders and mental health legislation throughout our state. We hope that you will join us next March for Eating Disorders Lobby Day 2011!
THE ALLIANCE MEETS WITH FRENCH MEMBER OF PARLIMENT, DEPUTY VALERIE BOYER
Johanna from The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness was honored to meet with Member of French Parliment, Deputy Valerie Boyer in her chambers in Marseille, France in early March. Deputy Boyer has been instrumental in pioneering and introducing legislation in France that would ban pro-eating disorder sites, raise the minimun BMI for models, and require that all digitally altered photographs of people used in advertising be labeled as retouched. Madame Boyer is working diligently to fight the pressures on young women to match the fashionable ideal of a thin body and perfect skin.
The Alliance celebrates and thanks Deputy Boyer for all her hard work in promoting change throughout France and nationwide. Click here and here to read more about the work that Deputy Boyer is doing.
EATING DISORDERS AWARENESS WEEK 2010
National Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2010 was a HUGE success for us! We spoke at over 30 different Palm Beach County locations and placed eating disorder materials at over 240 schools, community centers, retailers, shops, and restaurants. Our "Did You Know" and "Confidence is Beauty" campaigns were both very successful and information from both of these campaigns made their way to colleges, high schools, organizations, and retail stores throughout the country. Calls for information, referrals, and support have quadrupled and we are thrilled to be able to help out so many. We sincerely wish to thank all of our volunteers that helped make this week a HUGE success! We could not have done it without you!

THE ALLIANCE PARTNERS WITH PALM HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION
AND CENTER FOR HOPE OF THE SIERRAS FOR THREE SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS
SEPTEMBER 1 and SEPTEMBER 2, 2009
The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness is proud to partner with Palm Healthcare Foundation and Center for Hope of the Sierras for three presentations on Diabulimia: Diabetes and Eating Disorders.
Over 30 percent of patients with type 1 diabetes manipulate insulin to lose weight. The term "diabulimia" has been used in websites, chat rooms and blogs by those who suffer for years. Only recently this term is cited in publications for the public and health communities. Insulin omission offers a quick solution of purging calories via glucosuria. The mortality rate increases three-fold and the age of mortality decreases by almost a decade. Diabetes educators serve crucial roles in identifying the risks and facilitating their treatments.
Join Lorraine Platka-Bird, Ph.D., RD, Nutritionist of Center for Hope of the Sierras' Diabulimia Program for an educational presentation on the basics of diabulimia and how to work with patients that have both diabetes and eating disorders.
Presentations will be held:
Tuesday, September 1, 2009 from 10 - 11:30 am
Boca Raton Community Hospital
Education Building, Dawson Theater
Tuesday, September 1, 2009 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm
Palm Healthcare Foundation Pavilion
Wednesday, September 2, 2009 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm
Jupiter Medical Center
Meeting Room One
One CE credit will provided for Nurses, Mental Health Providers, and Psychologists, and certificates of attendance will be available for nutritionists/dieticians.
Refreshments will be served.

PROFILED BOOK OF THE MONTH
Goodbye Ed, Hello Me : Recover from Your Eating Disorder and Fall in Love with Life
By: Jenni Schaefer
Don't Battle an Eating Disorder Forever- Recover from It Completely!
With so many women approaching their diets, body image, and pursuit of a slender figure with slavish devotion, The Religion of Thinness is a timely addition to the discussion of our cultural obsession with weight loss. At the heart of this obsession is the belief that in order to be happy, one must be slim, and the attendant myths, rituals, images, and moral codes can leave some women with severe emotional damage. Idealized images in the media inspire devotees of this “religion” to experience guilt for behaviors that are biologically normal and necessary, and Lelwica offers two ways to combat this dangerous cultural message. Advising readers to look hard at the societal cues that cause them to obsess about their weight, and to remain mindful about their actions and needs, this book will not only help stop the cycle of guilt and shame associated with food, it will help readers to grow and accept their bodies as they are.
